4th Annual Canada Day Event
Saturday, June 27, 2009

Dust off your maple leaf, unfurl your red and white flags, grab your toque and get off the chesterfield to join CanDiego for the most awesome party of the year! Celebrate Canada's 142nd birthday a few days early in San Diego! CanDiego is having its annual Canada Day party on Saturday, June 27, 2009 at the Coronado Cays Yacht Club (www.ccyc.org ) starting at 5:30 pm. This is CanDiego's premier event of the year. The CCYC is an amazing venue. We can hang out in the spacious main dining room, the bar, or the patio. There's even a small grassy area for kids to play games and a swing set. All this with a beautiful view of the harbour. If you wish, you can even sail right up to the facility instead of driving there.& nbsp;Celebrate Canada Day in the best CanDiego tradition with Canadian beer ($4 each) and great food like maple glazed turkey burgers, Canadian blue beef burgers, and of course, veggie burgers. The burgers come with fries at a great price of $10.95 each. We'll have networking games, a raffle with great prizes, and of course, the singing of O Canada by an esteemed choir.

Sillan and Young - Live at Dizzy's Jazz Club

Canadian Cool Storms South! Sillan and Young is a great Western Canadian group who will be performing for the first time in San Diego on June 19, 2009 at Dizzy's Jazz Club (www.dizzysjazz.com ). It will be located in the Event Room of the San Diego Wine and Culinary Centre. The band plays a mix of jazz and folk-pop. If you enjoy Diana Krall, Holly Cole, Joni Mitchell, or Chantal Kreviazuk, you'll like Sillan and Young. He has completed levels I and II of the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants In depth Taxation Program and is a current member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario, and the Financial Planners Standards Council. USA Sevens - Canadian Supporters Party

Attention all Canadian Rugby Enthusiasts who are planning on escaping to San Diego in February to watch over forty-five 7's games in the sun!

The Rugby Canada Foundation is pleased to announce that the 2nd Annual Canadian Supporters Party at the USA Sevens (www.usasevens.com) in San Diego, California, will be taking place on February 13th at Henry's Pub (614 5th Street) in the heart of the Gaslamp Quarter. This is a great opportunity for all Canadian fans to gather in support of both our National Men's and Women's Sevens Teams. Similar to last year, the doors will open at 6:00pm, and Henry's Pub will be open only to Canadian Rugby Supporters until 9:00pm.

Entry to the event will be by donation and all funds raised go directly to support the players. The most patriotic Canuck will win a prize! More details on the live auction will be announced in the new year. A number of Canadian Rugby Clubs have already confirmed their attendance.

Speakers and Consultants

Dr. Carson earned his medical degree at McGill University in Montreal, where he received post-doctoral training in respiratory physiology. He graduated with honors and was awarded the Alexander Stewart prize in Medicine in 1976. Dr. Carson completed his internship and residency program at Children's Hospital in Boston and fellowship training at Harvard University School of Medicine. Upon completion of his training, he served as chief resident in pediatrics at UCSD School of Medicine. He is board certified in pediatrics and pediatric pulmonology. Dr. Carson is widely published in both the basic science and clinical research.

Isaac Shainblum received a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology from Concordia University, Montreal, Quebec, Canada. He has been a Northwestern Mutual Financial Representative since 1983. Isaac has also been a National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors member since 1987, an Million Dollar Round Table qualifying member for the past 8 years, and a National Quality Award recipient. His areas of expertise include Personal & Business Needs Analysis, Retirement Solutions, Education Funding, Life, Disability, and Long Term Care Insurance, Estate Analysis, and Employee & Executive Benefits. Mr. Shainblum currently resides in San Diego, California, with his wife, Carol, and son, Michael.

Dr. Dale Tylor was born in Montreal and graduated from medical school at McGill University in 2002. She then moved to Gainesville, Florida for General Surgery internship and Otolaryngology residency at the University of Florida, which she completed in 2007. In 2008 she became board-certified in Otolaryngology in both the US and Canada. She presently is a senior fellow in Pediatric Otolaryngology at Rady Children's Hospital, San Diego, affiliated with UCSD, and has full admitting and operating privileges there. Additionally, she is pursuing a Master of Public Health through the University of Liverpool in the United Kingdom. In August, Dale will move to Nashville, Tennessee, to be an Assistant Professor at Vanderbilt University, where she will practice as a Pediatric Otolaryngologist and teach this field to medical students, residents, and fellows; she will also continue epidemiologic research on pediatric hearing and obstructive sleep apnea. An avid world traveller, Dale also loves trekking, snowboarding, and recently she completed her first marathon.

Sandy Coventry has over twenty-one years of experience specializing in Employee Benefits and Individual Life, Health, & Disability Insurance. A graduate of UCSD in 1986, she has also received her Registered Health Underwriter (RHU) designation, an Employee Benefits specific course of study. In addition, she is obtaining her Certified Employee Benefits Specialist (CEBS) designation. Sandy is licensed for Employee Benefit, Life & Disability, Variable Annuity, and Property & Casualty sales. Sandy has been with two other full service insurance brokerages throughout her career, and most recently with Wateridge Insurance Services since November 2008.

Katherine Wichmann Zacharias brings more than 23 years of sales and marketing experience to the table. Katherine has been in the Insurance & Financial Services industry since 1993. For the first 5 years in the business, she was also securities licensed (Series 6 & 63). She specializes in Life and Health insurance. She is a member of the San Diego Association of Health Underwriters and the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors. She received her BA degree from San Diego State in International Business with a minor in Japanese, Spanish, and Asian Studies. She is a Rotarian and a member of InfraGard as well.

Jean Strouf is President and co-founder of Teague Financial Insurance Services, an employee benefits, health & life insurance firm that has made the San Diego Business Journal's Book of Lists for the past 10 years and has won many Corporate Awards including the prestigious BBB Torch Award for Marketplace Ethics in 2005 and 2006. A University of Wisconsin graduate, Jean earned her CLU (Chartered Life Underwriter), CFP (Certified Financial Planner) and RHU (Registered Health Underwriter) designations during her 25+ years selling and servicing group and individual plans. Her office is in downtown La Mesa, but Teague has serviced clients throughout Southern California for over 20 years. Jean's motto is "Do what you say you are going to do" and a company goal is to help get everyone into the health care system...either into a private plan, an employer-sponsored plan or one of the public plans (for lower income residents.) Ms. Strouf came to San Diego over 25 years ago and since moving here she has been active (and held office) in numerous trade, civic, and service organizations. Currently she spends much of her free time on her mini-ranch in Jamul.

San Diego Food Bank: Tuesday, December 16, 2008

San Diego has welcomed CanDiego over the years at many different venues and locations for our various events. With the holiday season coming up, for those less fortunate, a helping hand is a great gift. CanDiego is having a get-together on December 16 where we can help the Food Bank on an assembly line, loading food into boxes, which will eventually be delivered to those in need. As many of us get together with family and friends over the holidays, having great meals, there are so many in San Diego that go without food. Please join us at the San Diego Food Bank for a couple of hours and give back to the community. It will be greatly appreciated.
Established in 1977, the San Diego Food Bank (SDFB) is a critical component to the welfare of San Diego County, providing food to people in need, advocating for the hungry and educating the public about hunger-related issues. Through a combination of government programs and partnerships with over 300 San Diego County non-profit charities, SDFB acts as a central repository and distribution point for government and donated food. Funded by foundations, grants, USDA, corporations, sponsors and individual donors, SDFB distributes nearly 10 million pounds of food annually to individuals, families and a network of non-profit organizations that work to alleviate hunger throughout the county. www.sandiegofoodbank.org

CanDiego Happy Hour: November 7, 2008

2008 is almost over! With American Thanksgiving, Christmas, Kwanzaa, Hanukkah and other holidays around the corner, it's time to relax and connect with friends. CanDiego has a great Happy Hour planned for Friday, November 7 at Millers Field in Pacific Beach. This will be our last Happy Hour event for 2008 with many more to come in 2009. Come out for some beer (priced at $3), drinks, and great food, including Loonie Burgers, in the upstairs bar and patio. There's even a mechanical bull after 9:00 pm on Fridays. It will be a fun Friday night so kick back and get set for the weekend.

Old Town - CanDiego Gets a Taste of History: November 12, 2008


Join fellow CanDiegans and learn a little more about one another and your adopted city! Non Profit Status Update

The Bring-in-Canada day event helped kick off our initiative to establish CanDiego as a Non-Profit organization. Together we are all ensuring that "many hands make light work" and you'll see that we are expanding our capability to provide professional, cultural, and social events. We now have a Board assembled composed of the following volunteers:

Additionally, CanDiego is now incorporated and has filed its Non-Profit application with the IRS and the State of California Franchise Tax Board. Thanks to all who have helped this complex process come together especially Derek Lobo our Legal Counsel.

Bring in Canada Day 2007 - June 30, 2007

The Bring in Canada Day Celebration will be held at Prego Ristorante in Mission Valley on Saturday June 30, 2007 starting at 5:30 PM. If you were one of the 400 CanDiego members who helped celebrate Canada Day last year with us, then you know that it is our major event of the year and we definitely look forward to seeing you again this year. If you are new to CanDiego, you will not want to miss this event. Our membership has more than doubled since last year, so expect to see a great turn-out! (Registration omitted.)

 

Spring 2007 Happy Hour - Wednesday May 2nd, 2007

It's final. The CanDiego Spring 2007 Happy Hour is scheduled for the spectacular new Bondi Bar and Kitchen in downtown San Diego. Guitarist Chris Montgomery was classically trained at the Universities of Western Ontario and Toronto. He has performed at the DuMaurier Jazz Festival and the world famous Festival International de Jazz de Montreal. He is also a composer, arranger and producer. Chris spend many years working in marketing for BMG before venturing into the new world of digital music where was involved in the development of MP3.com. Chris has performed with Joe Pass, Phil Nimmons, Oscar Peterson, Rob McConnell and the Boss Brass, Sammy Nestico, Bob Magnusson, Bill Tole and Wayne Bergeron.

Trumpeter Jens Lindemann is hailed as one of the most celebrated soloists in his instrument's history. Jens has played in every major concert venue in the world; from the Philharmonics of New York, Los Angeles, London, Manchester, Munich, Hamburg, Lucerne and Berlin to Tokyo's Suntory Hall and even the Great Wall of China. For many years, Jens was the lead trumpet player for the world-famous Canadian Brass and has won major awards ranging from Grammy and Juno nominations to an honorary doctorate.

Jens was classically trained at the renowned Julliard School in New York and has recorded for BMG, EMI, CBC and the BBC. Jens is internationally endorsed by the Yamaha Corporation and teaches at UCLA in Los Angeles

CANADA DAY Happy Hour - Saturday July 1st, 2006

Our inaugural event will be held in San Diego at Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurant. San Diego-based alumni from all the major universities in Canada are being invited and so are other local Canadians and Friends-of-Canadians. Staff from the Canadian Consulate in San Diego will also attend. There are over 350 confirmed attendees! All in all, this event is slated to be a great start to our CanDiego community.
